My name is Charity Graves from Baltimore, MD. I am a paramedic and I had to deal with many tough situations. While I was going through a difficult time I thought about what life and death meant to me. I began to explore that through nine lives of a cat. Each life she has to learn something to grow better.

Each life represents a stage in development from Erikson’s stages of development.  Erikson’s model is unique because the development continues well into older adulthood.  The book will be enjoyed by both the older children and parents.

While this book is fiction, the stories were ways to explore different lessons I had to learn. I think as a child I had difficulty expressing myself and it was helpful to talk to my younger self.  I was able to work through some of my fear as I age as well. Hopefully this book can be helpful to everyone.

Evelyn is a cat that wants to grow strong everyday. Evelyn has nine lives to learn different lessons that will help her become the best cat she can be. Each life she has to face a different challenge. Hopefully Evelyn will learn to be the best cat she can be.

Evelyn’s journey takes her all over the world, from South Africa to Ireland, to Hong Kong and America. We may face different challenges but we still have universal similarities. All kids can relate to wanting to be loved and accepted. Hopefully all kids can relate to Evelyn’s many different lives.

Evelyn’s different lives represent different stages of development. When a person is growing up the person has to adjust to the changing environment. Evelyn learns how to catch mice, play games, and even lead sheep. Some tasks are harder than others, but with help she can do anything.

CHAPTER 1

First life is about survival. Evelyn can only focus on her hunger and her next meal. Food insecurity causes the same problem in many children’s lives. Children do better when their needs are met. Children take this mentality into their adulthood. Evelyn grows strong after she learns to trust Banele.

CHAPTER 2

In the second life, Evelyn wants to learn how to complete a task on her own. Evelyn learns that not every instinct is safe. Evelyn has a helpful teacher to guide her through the uncomfortable experience of learning to catch a mouse. She grows to trust herself and not live in her past mistakes.

CHAPTER 3

The third life has Evelyn trying to be different to catch a pesky mouse. Evelyn tries to be a bird with some comical results. Evelyn tries to be a frog, but realizes she has to accept herself to catch the mouse.
